GURUGRAM: NHAI is likely to construct an underpass and a slip road to decongest Sohna Road. People living in residential colonies on either side of the road continue to face traffic snarls under its elevated stretch.
In a recent meeting of the district road safety committee, Gurugram deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav directed NHAI officials to resolve traffic congestion issues in the area. NHAI was also directed to take steps to reduce the number of road accidents. A total of 36 'blackspots' - spots prone to accidents - have been identified in Gurugram, out of which the maximum (19) are on roads built or maintained by NHAI.
To streamline traffic on and under Sohna elevated road, Yadav directed officials to reduce congestion at Tikri Cut, Sheeshpal Vihar T-point and Vatika Chowk through changes in the road design and engineering.
At Sheeshpal Vihar T-point, he ordered the construction of a slip road to ensure easy entry and exit from Sohna road for commuters headed towards Sheeshpal Vihar.
NHAI officials told Yadav that they are planning to construct an underpass at Vatika Chowk to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles on Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), which intersects Sohna Road at the junction.
Those living in the societies along Sohna Road, SPR and nearby new sectors have to cross Vatika Chowk frequently, and the high volume of traffic at this junction has made it a perennial jam point.
The elevated road hasn't been able to reduce congestion as it can be used only by those headed to Sohna from Gurugram. Yadav was informed by officials that NHAI is preparing a detailed project report for the underpass.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee has been formed for the improvement of traffic movement at Rajiv Chowk. The committee will suggest the ways to streamline traffic flow at the busy intersection.
Yadav also reviewed the steps taken to reduce accidents at 36 blackspots. Till August 16 this year, around 598 accidents have been reported in Gurugram. A total of 325 people have died in road accidents at these spots between 2019 and 2021. The blackspots include Rajiv Chowk, Kherki Daula, Narsinghpur cut, Hero Honda Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Shankar Chowk, Atlas Chowk, Rampura flyover and Khusboo Chowk, among others.
Of the total, there are eight blackspots on roads managed by the public works department (building and roads), 19 on national highways, seven on GMDA roads and one on an HSIIDC road. The list was compiled by the traffic police and the district's road safety committee on the basis of fatal accidents in the city between 2019 and 2021.
Blackspots on NHAI roads accounted for 216 (66.4%) of the total road accidents, while there were 47 fatalities - or 14.4% - in accidents on roads managed by PWD, and 45 (13.8%) on GMDA roads.
