Justice Pankaj Mithal is new CJ of Rajasthan HC
Jaipur: The Chief Justice of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, Justice Pankaj Mithal, was transferred as the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court on Tuesday. The law and justice ministry issued orders to this effect on Tuesday following the recommendation of the SC collegium recently. He is likely to take oath of office on October 14.
The post of chief Justice of Rajasthan HC is lying vacant since the incumbent, Justice SS Shinde, retired on August 1, and Justice MM Srivastava has been functioning as the acting Chief Justice.
“In exercise of the power conferred by Clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Rajasthan and to direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Rajasthan,” said the notification issued by the ministry of law and justice.
Justice Mithal is originally from Allahabad HC. He was appointed as an additional judge in Allahabad HC from the bar quota on July 7, 2006. He was made permanent on July 2, 2008. The collegium had recommended Justice Mithal’s name as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh HC according to seniority in December 2020. He took oath as the CJ of the J&K and Ladakh High Court on January 4, 2021.
