Ludhiana: Ludhiana Central jail has started volleyball and kabaddi matches every evening. The move is aimed at keeping them healthy and channelising their energy. Three separate kabaddi grounds have been prepared in three wards, including New Barracks, KU ward and central hata of the Ludhiana central jail. Volleyball nets have also been installed in all barracks. Besides, morning physical training (PT) has been started for inmates.
Every morning at 9am sharp, inmates come out of their barracks for 20-minute PT. Staff members ensure participation of all inmates. In the evening, from 4pm to 5pm, inmates play kabaddi and volleyball.
Shivraj Singh Nandgarh, superintendent, Ludhiana Central Jail said, “We have about 4,300 inmates in Ludhiana jail and they fight now and then. Therefore, it is important to channelise theirs energy. That is why we started daily evening games for inmates. We have got at least three kabaddi grounds prepared in BKU ward, New Barracks and Central Hata. Also, volleyball nets have been installed in all barracks. Every evening, inmates of these barracks play for at least one hour.” The superintendent added, “After sometime, we plan to have matches between different barracks to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship among inmates. Security personnel remain present to ensure that things proceed peacefully.”The official also said that jail authorities were preparing a Bhangra team to perform in the jail.
