Advocate Sawant for Rutuja Latke Commissioner argued that BMC can waive the 30-day notice after receiving notice pay but they have not given Latke formal letter of resignation yet. Advocate Sakhare for BMC has replied that resignation cannot be accepted because money has been paid and the payment of one month’s notice is after resignation is accepted. Court will resume hearing at 2:30 pm to hear BMC’s stand.

Criminal cases have been registered against seven leaders from the Uddhav Thackeray camp of the Shiv Sena for allegedly making ‘offensive statements’ against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a rally. The cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Vinayak Raut, Bhaskar Jadhav and Sushma Andhare among others, news agency PTI reported. The statements were allegedly made at Mahaprabhodan Yatra launched by ‘Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ at Thane on Sunday.

In other news, the Election Commission of India’s (ECI’s) decision to allot two swords and shield symbol to the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has been touted by the party as a “repeat of historical events”, when the Sena used the symbol to contest the Thane Municipal Corporation polls and emerged as the winning party with the largest number of seats.

Resignation cannot be accepted because money has been paid: Senior advocate Anil Sakhare

"The payment of one month's notice is after resignation is accepted. In default of such remittance Municipal Commissioner may take suitable actions.Resignation is on 3rd. It cannot happen in 7-8 days," Senior adovcate Sakhare for BMC said.

Commissioner can waive the 30-day notice, but they have not given Latke formal letter yet: Advocate Sawant

As per Rule 28 of of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Service (Conduct) Regulations, 1989 employee has to give one month notice. If one does not give notice, by default they have to remit to corporation a one month's salary from treasure.The Municipal commissioner may take suitable steps to recover amount from the dues payable or by other means if sufficient dues are not available to the employee's credit. But Latke had deposited money at the time of resignation.

Notice pay challan submitted by Latke pending with BMC: Advocate Sawant

"On October 10, after verifying compliance with all the requisitions raised by it, BMC raised a tax invoice / challan on the petitioner towards the payment of notice pay equivalent to one month’s pay of Rs 67,590 to co contest the polls. Remark for the same is 'notice pay for municipal employee'. It shows BMC has acknowledged the payment. She's on the clerical post and now we are told it is pending with Municopal commissioner. In normal circumstances, it would not go before the Municipal commissioner. But because she wants to contest elections, the delay is happening," advocate Sawant said.

Senior advocate Vishwajeet Sawant for Rutuja Latke seeks that BMC should accept the resignation letter

Senior advocate Sawant argued that Latke had given resignation on October 3 soon after the election schedule was announced by the election commission and had sought it to be accepted at earliest. Sawant refers to Rule 6 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Service (Conduct) Regulations, 1989, which stipulated that a BMC employee is prohibited from contesting polls. Sawant says the petitioner had written to BMC to permit her co contest the bypoll by relaxing the prohibition and had also paid the notice pay of Rs. 67, 590 in lieu of the notice period and same was received by the BMC.

Man, three of his family booked for trying to kill his wife

Police have registered a case against a man and his three family members at Dombivli in Maharashtra's Thane district for trying to kill his 24-year-old wife, an official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on October 7 at their house in Kopar, he said.

"The victim was getting ready for a job interview when her mother-in-law stopped her from stepping out. Her husband also prevented her from appearing for the interview and beat her up. He also kicked her when she tried to call her father," he added.

Her husband tried to strangle her. Besides him, her sister-in-law also tried to kill her by throttling her using a belt, the complaint said, adding that her in-laws also instigated them to kill her. (PTI)

Maharashtra: Bhiwandi Nizampur civic body hikes ex-gratia by Rs 900

The Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) in Thane district of Maharashtra will increase the ex-gratia of its employees by Rs 900 to take the total amount to Rs 11,000, an official said.

Municipal commissioner and administrator Vijaykumar Mhasal made the announcement on Wednesday after holding talks with the representatives of the civic workers unions.

Spokesperson of the civic body Sunil Zalke said the decision will benefit 4,317 employees of the corporation. (PTI)

Seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai 97.09 percent

Seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai are 97.09 percent full with a cumulative water stock of 14,05,247 ML.
Same day last year (2021), water stock was 14,40,165 ML and lakes were 99.50 percent full.

The seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai are Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi, located either in Mumbai at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar. In the past 24 hours catchment areas of the seven lakes have collectively received 32 mm of rainfall.

Thane man held 'captive, tortured' in Thailand by company that wants USD 3,000 to release him, alleges his brother

A man based in Thane has lodged a police complaint alleging that his younger brother has been held captive in Thailand by his employer company since the last one month. The compay is demanding USD 3,000 for his release, an official said on Thursday.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) is staring at yet another political crisis as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to accept the resignation of one of its employees Rutuja Latke, the Sena’s prospective candidate for the Andheri East bypoll.

Rutuja Latke resigned on October 3, however, her resignation is yet to be accepted by the civic administration. The BMC’s decision not to immediately relieve Latke has put a question mark on her ability to contest the Andheri East bypoll. The IIT Bombay has developed a technology to aid speech-to-speech translation from English to Marathi.

October rainfall figure breaches 100-mm mark in 2022

Mumbai received more than 100 millimetres (mm) of rainfall between October 1 and October 11, quite unusual for this time of the year, said officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Maharashtra records spike in swine flu cases, highest since 2018

With the spread of swine flu on the rise, Maharashtra recorded a six-fold increase in the number of cases — from 552 on July 30 to 3,477 on September 30, and a 10-time spike in deaths — from 20 to 191 during the same period, the Health Department said in its latest release.

The state has reported the maximum number of swine flu cases — highest since 2018, said health officials, adding that the mortality rate, however, remained low due to more vigilance and awareness among the people amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Read more

Mumbai logs 194 new Covid-19 cases, 1 death; active tally at 948

Mumbai reported 194 new coronavirus cases, a jump from 129 a day ago, taking the overall tally to 11,51,776, while the death of one more patient due to the infection pushed up the toll to 19,737, the city civic body said.

The metropolis has reported more than 100 coronavirus cases for the sixth day in a row. On Tuesday, Mumbai had logged 129 Covid-19 cases, but zero death.

Western Railway reserves more seats for women in Mumbai local trains

The Western Railway’s Mumbai division has said that it has increased the seating capacity of women passengers in local trains.

Earlier, 23.33 per cent of the total seating capacity in suburban trains was earmarked for women and the number has now gone up to 25.47%, an increase of 2.14 per centage points.

The total seating capacity in a 12-car rake is 1,170, of which 273 is earmarked for women in the ladies compartment. The WR has claimed that it has now added 25 more seats by modifying the general compartment, taking the total seating capacity to 298.
