Science City food court by next summer
Science centre that has a footfall of around 14-15 lakh visitors per annum has standalone food stalls but no proper food court or cafeteria.
KOLKATA: Construction of a modern food court has started full-swing at Science City following a nod from KMC. The 5,000 sq ft facility that will come up on a plot next to the Science Exploration Hall off EM Bypass will be able to seat around 150 visitors at a time.
“We had completed work till the plinth level around seven months ago. The KMC has recently approved the rest of the plan and work has started. We will push for a May 2023 completion of the facility and commissioning either that month or the next,” said Science City director Anurag Kumar.
Now, the science centre that has a footfall of around 14-15 lakh visitors per annum has standalone food stalls but no proper food court or cafeteria. “The food court is an amenity that has been sorely missing. We hope to have it in place by next summer when we get a footfall of around 1.5 lakh per month. The food court will have six counters offering Bengali, north Indian, south Indian, Continental, Pan Asian and Continental cuisines. There will be a roof-top private dining facility that groups can book,” Kumar explained.
The food court will also house large restrooms for men and women. Also on the anvil is a 1,000 sq ft souvenir shop that will offer education kits and scientific toys. At present, there is a small 64 sq ft kiosk from where such toys are sold.
National Council of Science Museums director general AD Chouhudry said with footfall fast returning to pre-Covid level, the food court would be a significant addition to facilities at the centre.
