NAVI MUMBAI: The alertness of three collegians, including two girls, helped Vashi police nab a three-member gang of phone thieves, who had flicked the mobile of a passenger travelling in an Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus on Monday.
Police said Sandhya Shinde, Vaishnavi Kasare and Amol Hegde are students of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil (Modern) college in Vashi. The arrested accused are Ramzan Shaikh (24), resident of Mumbra, Wasim Shaikh (30) from Digha and Altamaz Ahmed (23), who hails from Uttar Pradesh, said senior inspector Ramesh Chavan of Vashi police station.
"On Monday, around 4.15pm, the police emergency number 112 at Mahape main control room conveyed a message to Vashi police beat marshal 5 that some mobile thieves had boarded an NMMT bus on route number 20," said Chavan.
Police asked the students to board the bus and keep them informed about its location. Chavan added, "Based on the students' information, the two constables managed to board the bus before the mobile phone thieves could alight. The three accused were apprehended after the three students identified them." When frisked, police found an iPhone worth Rs 30,000 from one of the suspects which he had flicked from a passenger who was in the same bus, but unaware that his phone was stolen.
