RAJKOT/AHMEDABAD: In a precursor to a high-pitched election campaigning for upcoming assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a diatribe against his political opponents saying they had "hounded" him for 20 long years and resorted to smear campaign against Gujarat.
Addressing a public rally in Jam Kandorna village of Rajkot district, Modi alluded to a collusion between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), saying that that the grand old party had outsourced the work of 'abusing' him while it was quietly working to capture votes.
"They (Congress) have suddenly gone silent and outsourced the contract of creating fracas and abusing me to others. They are silently going to villages and asking people for votes," Modi said, without naming AAP.
Modi also gave a terse recall of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's 'maut ka saudagar' (merchant of death) utterance against him in the run-up to 2007 assembly polls and said people of Gujarat had abjectly rejected the party.
"They left no stone unturned to harass me in the last 20 years, hurled choicest abuses at me and even used all possible legal tactics by going to courts. In the process, they also resorted to a slander campaign against Gujarat. But all those who worked against the interests of Gujarat were outrightly rejected (in polls) every time," he said.
Modi tells BJP cadre to remain vigilant
The PM reiterated the warning against Congress' new strategy which he had sounded in Vallabh Vidyanagar rally on Monday and asked the BJP cadres to remain vigilant. He said Congress is organizing 'Khatla Baithaks (informal meetings) in villages and imploring for votes.
Continuing his tirade against the Congress, Modi also urged people to defeat people who have no respect for 'son of the soil' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
"People from all over the world have visited the Statue of Unity built as a tribute to Sardar Patel. But find out one Congressman who has been there. Even if a handful of them have, they did so clandestinely. Those who have no reverence for sons of soil can't be acceptable in Gujarat," he said.
