1.8kg of gold seized from woman passenger at Chennai airport
CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai airport on Monday seized 1.8 kg of gold which was hidden in emergency lamps carried by a woman passenger.
The woman, identified as Sarimala Nagamuthu who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was intercepted by customs officials on suspicion. Three emergency lamps were found in her baggage. The lamps were dismantled and the batteries were opened.
The officials found gold plates wrapped in white papers and concealed in the battery packs. In total, 24 gold plates weighing 1.808 kg were recovered. The seized gold was valued at Rs 79.44 lakh, said officials.
The woman was booked under the Customs Act and released on bail. Further investigations were on.
