Ludhiana: In one of the biggest operations in a day, the mobile wing of the state GST (SGST) department on Monday impounded 45 trucks laden with scrap which were travelling without proper sale documents.
The operation involving different teams of SGST comprising about 50 members was conducted on Ludhiana- Delhi national highway near Mandi Gobindgarh and at several other factories. Several other traders even suspended the sale of goods for the day in wake of the action of SGST department.
According to highly-placed sources in the department, officials laid checkpoints at several places following instructions from state’s additional commissioner (taxation) Viraj S Tidke. Sources said in the checking conducted so far, most of the trucks have been found without the mandatory e-way bills needed for sale of goods priced above Rs 50,000, while there were some trucks which were ferrying goods using bogus bills.
Confirming about the development, H P S Ghotra, director, SGST mobile wing Punjab, said, “So far, 45 trucks of iron scrap have been impounded by different teams headed by state taxation officers Lakhvir Singh Chahal, Gurdeep Singh and Saurabh Singla. Verification of the documents seized from these trucks is going on at this moment. A huge penalty will be imposed on those found evading GST.”
