NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to grant an urgent hearing on the plea of the Enforcement Directorate seeking cancellation of bail granted to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in a money laundering case and posted the case to Tuesday.
Deshmukh was granted bail by the high court last week, saying it would be “unsafe’’ to rely on statements of dismissed cop and co-accused Sachin Waze in the money laundering case against Maharashtra former home minister. His bail plea was pending in the HC for more than six months and it was heard only after the apex court asked the HC to grant him a hearing and decide the case expeditiously.
Challenging the order of the HC, the agency rushed to the Supreme Court seeking stay of the HC order. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the agency, mentioned the case before a bench headed by Chief Justice U U Lalit for an early listing of the case and the court agreed to post the case to Tuesday.
The high court, while granting bail to Deshmukh, said its order will become effective from October 13 to allow the agency to approach SC against its order.
Deshmukh was arrested by the ED in November last year.
