Karnataka: Man, wife end lives after returning from Kodagu trip

MANGALURU: A couple ended their lives in an apartment in Kankanady town police station limits. City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said the deceased are Mallikarjuna, 34, and Sowmya, 35. Mallikarjuna was a freelance web designer and Sowmya, an ITI college lecturer.
It is learnt that the duo had been on a trip to Kodagu two days ago and had returned on Sunday night. It is suspected that they had a fight before taking the extreme step.
Mallikarjuna had allegedly ended his life by hanging to a fan in the bedroom of the house after returning. On finding him dead, Sowmya reportedly informed her cousin over phone and later hanged herself to a ceiling fan in the hall. By the time her cousins reached the house, she was dead. The reason for the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.
Sources said the couple was married about 1.5 years ago but used to fight often. No death note has been retrieved. A police officer investigating the case said the incident does not seem to be a planned one. Police are examining their mobile phones and laptop. The bodies have been handed over to the family after the completion of the necessary procedures including post-mortem.
