ED arrests Manik Bhattacharya in teachers' recruitment scam

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday night arrested Manik Bhattacharya, former chairman of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education and Trinamool Congress leader, for 'non-cooperation' in investigation. ED has questioned Bhattacharya on Monday in connection with the alleged irregularities in primary teachers’ appointments.

Transfer Kerala gold smuggling case to Karnataka: ED to SC

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine the ED’s plea for transfer of trial in the gold smuggling case from Kerala to Karnataka and sought aresponse from the Kerala government. A bench of Chief Justice U U Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat issued notice to the state government on a transfer plea of the agency and asked it to file response by October 14. It posted the case for October 20 for disposal.

Hyderabad police seize 400kg of donkey meat, arrest 7

In possibly the largest seizure of its kind in India in recent years, the Andhra Pradesh police seized 400kg of donkey meat from four different places in Bapatla town. Seven people have been arrested in the case. Wildlife activists who helped the police in the raids said the practice of slaughtering donkeys goes back many years in Andhra Pradesh. The accused were selling the meat for Rs 600 a kg.

Bizman shot by bike-borne men in Delhi

A businessman on his way home was shot dead by two bike-borne men in southwest Delhi’s Bindapur early on Monday. The Dwarka police have launched a manhunt for the shooters. The incident sent shockwaves through the local trading community, which held aprotest against the police. Around 12. 30am, Mohit Arora was returning home from his sari showroom with his elder brother, Rohit Arora. The brothers run three showrooms. The brothers, carrying the day’s earnings, took the usual route home, just a kilometre from the showroom. Rohit could not understand the motive of the shooters.
