Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several other leaders on Monday condoled the death of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister
Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Mulayam Singh had maintained an uncompromising stand against communalism and played a leadership role in stitching together a Left-secular political front at the national level, said Vijayan. “The fact that he remained a member in the UP assembly for over three decades and was also elected to
Lok Sabha thrice underscores the public support he enjoyed. Singh always kept a cordial relationship with Left parties,” Vijayan said.
The passing away of Singh at a time when unity among Left-secular forces was picking up was a huge loss to Indian politics, he added.
KPCC president K Sudhakaran remembered Yadav as a model secularist who always fought against communal forces by combining together democratic-secularist forces. “Singh was a visionary ruler. I used to keep close acquaintance with him ever since I was elected to Lok Sabha. He saw everyone as equals,” Sudhakaran said.
Speaker A N Shamseer in his condolence message said Singh was a tall leader who always tried to propel national politics for the cause of justice to backward sections in society. “A Parliamentarian par excellence, he stood for safeguarding the democratic character of the country,” the speaker said.
