COIMBATORE: The cybercrime police arrested a 32-year-old man on Monday for cheating a 24-year-old woman of 60,000 by posing as an Indian Air Force employee.
The arrested person was identified as A Paramasivam of North Car Street at Koomapatti in Virudhunagar district, an engineering graduate.
The woman, who is very active on social media, used to upload her photos and videos on Facebook, Instagram, YoYo and WhatsApp, police said. A man who introduced himself as Mathiswaran, an employee of the electrical department at the base repair depot at Sulur Air Base, used to chat with her.
His social media accounts had photos of a handsome man. They used to chat over phone also and he expressed interest in marrying her. He even spoke to her parents about marrying her.
“After winning the parents’ trust, the man asked the woman to send her nude photos and videos, which she did. In August, he contacted her over phone and said he had met with an accident and requested some money for treatment. The woman transferred 60,000 to his account.
The woman was shocked to meet the man in person after a few days. He threatened to upload her nude videos and photos on social media and demanded 1 lakh. When she refused to pay up, he created fake accounts on social media and uploaded the videos and photos,” a police officer said.
The woman approached police and the cybercrime police registered a case against the man. Cybercrime police inspector Arun and team arrested Paramasivam on Monday.
“He was working as a security guard. We believe he had cheated several women using the same modus operandi,” the officer added. Paramasivam was booked under sections 419, 420, 506 (1) of the Indian Penal Code, 66 (C) (D), and 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 2002.
