AGRA: A 15-year-old pregnant girl who was raped three months ago was allegedly set ablaze by the main accused, who is her cousin, and his immediate family members in Mainpuri district. Cops lodged an FIR against three people, out of which two are on the run.
The girl meanwhile suffered severe burn injuries and was first admitted to the Mainpuri district hospital. She was later referred to the Saifai Medical College in Etawah district for advanced treatment and is critical.
The girl's mother alleged that her daughter was raped by her cousin but initially did not reveal her ordeal to her family. Later, after she complained of severe stomach pain, it was found that she was pregnant. The village panchayat was informed and on October 6, it asked both parties to "reach a compromise" as the crime committed was "within the family".
The accused's mother then allegedly took the victim to her house and, along with her daughter and accused son, threw petrol on the girl and set her ablaze. She was rushed to the hospital.
Mainpuri SP Kamlesh Kumar Dixit said, "On Saturday, a woman filed a complaint stating that her sister-in-law's son raped and then attempted to immolate her daughter on October 6. The victim, during treatment, said that her uncle's son, daughter and wife tried to set her on fire. The minor confirmed that she was raped by her cousin three months ago."
He added, "A case has been registered under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 376 (rape) along with relevant sections of the Pocso Act. The accused aunt has been arrested. She is being interrogated in custody."
Meanwhile, the mother of the girl told TOI, "We first agreed not to file a police complaint because we were being pressured by the village panchayat to compromise. The accused's mother publicly apologised for the crime committed by her son. She assured me that she would get my daughter's child aborted and later get her married to someone else. My daughter was set ablaze instead."
(The rape victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her identity as per Supreme Court's directives on cases related to sexual assault)
