Online fraud: Woman loses Rs 16 lakh in Karnataka

MANGALURU: A 48-year-old woman has reportedly lost Rs 16.89 lakh after an accused who introduced himself as Jovan, a doctor from Canada, on Instagram promised to send her gifts.
The woman met the accused on the social media platform about a month ago. Later they started chatting on WhatsApp.
On October 2, he told the woman that he would be sending her an iPhone, gold and US dollars.
Later, a person claiming to be customs officer called the complainant asking her to pay money for the parcel charge and other formalities.
The woman, who trusted the caller, went on depositing money to the said account. A case has been registered at the Udupi CEN police station.
