Chennai: Three years on, man, 56-year-old, gets life term for murder

CHENNAI: A civil court here sentenced a 56-year-old man to life imprisonment and imposed 5000 fine on him for a brutal murder during a fist-fight on the streets of Tondiarpet in July 2019.
The cases pertains to an argument in 2019 between Elumazhai, 56, and Perumal in Tondiarpet. Elumazhai abused Perumal in front of his shop. After this, he slashed Perumal's throat with a paper cutter in the presence of witnesses, including the victim's wife.
He also threatened bystanders to not come to Perumal's rescue as he would kill anyone who did so. This prevented others from helping Perumal while the crime occured in broad daylight at around 4.30 in the evening on the streets of Tondiarpet. He was then arrested by Tondiarpet police who filed an FIR against him based on a complaint from his wife.
LAbraham Lincoln, the XVIII additional district judge, ruled that Elumazhai was found guilty under under Sec 302 (punishment for murder) along with Sec 294(b) for uttering obscene words and Sec 506(ii) (punishment for criminal intimidation).
