HYDERABAD: In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Abhishek Boinapally in connection with Delhi Excise Policy scam.
CBI called him for questioning on Sunday, and Abhishek reportedly refused to cooperate with the CBI investigation into the ongoing liquor scam.
CBI alleged that Abhishek was working on behalf of the south lobby in Delhi liquor scam.
This is the second arrest by CBI in the liquor scam. ED had arrested one more accused in the case. He is not named in the CBI FIR initially.
Abhishek is close confidant to a top political leader in Telangana.
Abhishek Boinpally is a director, along with Arun Ramchandra Pillai in Robin Distilleries LLP. Arun Pillai and Abhishek founded Robin Distribution LLP on July 12, 2022, which was registered with Hyderabad Registrar of Companies. The address of Robin Distribution LLP in Navketan Complex on Sarojini Devi Road, Secunderabad, is the same as that of a beauty salon called Anoo's Beauty Parlour.
The liqour scam was filed against Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Arun Pillai at Kokapet in Hyderabad, and former excise commissioner of Delhi Arva Gopi Krishna, an IAS officer of Delhi cadre and a native of Andhra Pradesh.
Arun Ramchandra Pillai collected bribes from another accused Sameer Mahendru, managing director of lndospirit, and passed it on to the other accused.
The CBI case pertains to the decisions about excise policy for the year 2021-22 without seeking the approval of competent official authority to extend undue favours to the licensee. The CBI filed the case against Sisodia and others, including Arun Pillai, for committing financial irregularities in executing the new liquor policy.
The south lobby includes two liquor cartels. The Ongole YSR Congress MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy and his Balaji Distilleries in Nellore, Chennai and Delhi were earlier raided by Enforcement Directorate. Of the three liqour cartels, one is based in Hyderabad and linked to promoters of prominent pharmaceutical and real estate company. The other is based in Andhra Pradesh and allied to the Ongole MP, and the third operates out of Delhi.
