MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a currency that works and will continue to work, said deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, reacting to reported statements by Uddhav Thackeray that after demonetisation, Modi was a "spent currency" and hence the BJP and CM Eknath Shinde need Balasaheb Thackeray.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, a day after the Election Commission, in its interim order, disallowed both the Thackeray and Shinde factions from using the Shiv Sena party name and symbol, Fadnavis said, "Uddhav has forgotten that post-demonetisation, all elections have been won on the Modi currency. His 18 MPS were elected to the Lok Sabha on the Modi currency as also his 56 MLAs. We revere Balasaheb, but the Modi currency works and will continue to work."
Fadnavis said there was nothing surprising in the EC's interim decision as in the past too it has taken such decisions before taking the final decision. "I expect when the final decision is taken, the Shinde view will be upheld," he said.
BJP state unit president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said a huge tsunami has hit the Shiv Sena. "Uddhav Thackeray is responsible for the disintegration of the Shiv Sena. Very soon his situation is going to be like Hum Do, Humare Do (We two, our two). He formed alliances against the party's core ideology for the CM's post and to obtain positions for his family members and in the process, destroyed his party..."
Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said the slogan 'Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji' would be used to inspire Shiv Sainiks. "But today there is a sense of despair in the Uddhav faction. Instead of behaving like a king, he should have behaved like the family head with regard to his party."
