Thane to have educated & jobless youth census to curb migration
Officials said this is a first such initiative that will help bridge the gap between the demand from the industry and local manpower
THANE: The Thane district team will compile a one of its kind local census of educated and unemployed youth and the industrial requirement from the district, officials informed. The initiative, officials said, will help curb migration to and from the district as there would be a proper match in requirement and availability of workforce.
Newly appointed Thane collector Ashok Shingare directed the district authorities at a skill development meet held recently. Newly appointed Thane Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Manuj Jalan was also present for the session along with officials from the Thane Corporation. Officials said this is a first such initiative that will help bridge the gap between the demand from the industry and local manpower. As per plans, the administration will collate information about youngsters who have passed out from colleges and those who have completed certain skill development courses but are yet to get a job. Simultaneously, there will be communication with the local industries following which the department would be able to tailor its skill development programmes based on local demand.
“This is a one of its kind initiative to be done in the metropolitan region in recent times. The idea is to optimise the employment options locally for the youngsters here who may not have to migrate elsewhere, and also for the industries that may not need to look at migrants and get talents locally. The database could be updated periodically,” informed a district official.
The initiative, said officials, will also help the administration get a trend of which skills are in great demand in the local areas and the availability of talent in their respective jurisdiction.
