Will improve facilities at Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps: Union minister
Coimbatore: Union minister of state for home affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra chaired a meeting at the district collectorate on Saturday to review the implementation of projects and developmental works that were financed by the central government at the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps in the district.
He also sought to know if the Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps in the district were equipped with enough facilities.
There are 106 such camps in the state, housing nearly 59,000 refugees. In Coimbatore, he said, there were four Sri Lankan Tamil refugee camps with 3,002 inmates.
“We have collected grievances from the refugees in the camps to improve the facilities. We will extend support and ensure that the developmental works that are financed by the Union government are completed in a time bound manner,” the minister said.
The meeting was attended by Jacintha Lazarus, commissioner of rehabilitation and welfare of non-resident Tamils, Pollachi MP K Shanmughasundaram, district collector G S Sameeran and corporation commissioner M Prathap.
Later in the day, the minister inspected Valankulam lake.
