GUWAHATI: Three days after the Uttarakhand avalanche, the bodies of the two NE mountaineers, Deepshikha Hazarika of Assam and Tiklu Jyrwa of Meghalaya, were recovered from the site of the accident.
"At 8am on Saturday, the bodies of Deepshikha Hazarika Tiklu Jyrwa from the northeast were identified at a helipad after they were flown down from the site where they were recovered a day earlier," an official of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) told TOI on Saturday.
He said the body of Deepshikha, who hailed from Rajgarh area of Guwahati, has been handed over to her family. Her mortal remains are likely to be brought to Assam on Sunday. She was undergoing advanced training at NIM, Uttarkashi.
District magistrate (Uttarkashi) Abhishek Ruhela said Deepshikha's father received her body, while Tiklu's brother-in-law received his. "We have arranged for the transport for the two families up to Dehradun. They left for their homes today with the mortal remains of the two mountaineers. We will prefer that they go by air from Dehradun," Ruhela said.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma took to Twitter to express his grief over the demise of Tiklu Jyrwa. "Extremely sad to share that Mr. Tiklu Jyrwa, the mountaineer from Shillong who along with a team of mountaineers went missing after an avalanche hit them in Uttarakhand has passed away," he tweeted.
