GUWAHATI: In a gesture of respect to seniors, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and his predecessor and current Union shipping minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, washed and dried the feet of the elderly
BJP functionaries, who were the special guests, at the opening of the state-of-the-art party office here on Saturday. The office has been named after Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Later, Sharma shared a video on Twitter saying, “Showing respect to the seniors, an ethos of Indian culture, is a cornerstone of our party’s tradition. Honoured to have washed the feet of our respected senior BJP functionaries whose immense contributions helped strengthen our party’s base in the early phase in Assam.”
In the video, Sarma can be seen sitting on the floor and washing the feet of the party elders and then wiping them dry with a piece of cloth.
Speaking to media persons later, he said, “It was an honour for me to have this opportunity to wash the feet of our senior BJP functionaries whose huge contributions in the early phase in Assam helped strengthen our party’s base.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Sonowal said, “We have always been inspired by the blessings and experiences of the seniors in the party. The growing strength of the organisation, along with the widespread popularity and acceptability of the party, is because of the contributions of the seniors to the party. They will forever be our source of inspiration towards service and commitment to nation building.”
