Maharashtra: Monsoon withdrawal delayed, expect more rains from Sunday to Wednesday
Don't put the raincoats in cupboards yet
NAGPUR: With rainfall continuing in different parts of the region, the withdrawal of southwest monsoon might get delayed here too. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has already predicted delayed withdrawal for Maharashtra.
According to the officials of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, the normal date for monsoon withdrawal over Vidarbha, including Nagpur is between October 10-15.
“We have not declared the withdrawal yet from Vidarbha which has been receiving light to moderate rainfall over fairly wide-spread regions. There is a moisture incursion due to the persistence of cyclonic circulation over central parts of South Bay of Bengal. Simultaneously, the passing of trough adjoining to Vidarbha is causing rainfall activities at present,” said officials.
Stating that there is no such signature in the climate model for medium range simulations for withdrawal, officials added that the persistence of anti-cyclonic circulation over the north-west India and north westerly wind over Vidarbha will define the monsoon withdrawal.
“This is major signature that causes cessation in rainfall over Vidarbha. A delay in withdrawal may possible but not more than a week, as per model guidance,” they added.
As per IMD, the rainfall averaged over the country during this month is most likely to be above normal. “The long period average (LPA) of rainfall over the country for October is 75.4 millimeters (mm), based on the data of 1971-2020. Normal to above rainfall is likely over most parts of India except small pockets of the southernmost and northernmost region,” the met department stated.
RMC forecast shows that scattered rainfall is expected to occur in most districts in the region till October 9. From October 10 to October 12, fairly widespread rainfall is expected. Nagpur too is expected to receive few spells of rainfall in the next four days. On Saturday, the highest rainfall was recorded in Gondia at 30 mm.
This year, Nagpur has witnessed record-breaking showers, recording the wettest June, August and September.
The wettest day of the month for Nagpur was September 13, when the city recorded 127.6 mm rains. This is significantly more than the rainfall recorded on highest days of last three months. In June this year, the highest rainfall was 60.4 mm recorded on 26th, followed by 88.4 mm on July 8 and 108.7 mm on August 8.
