GUWAHATI: In the fight towards a drugs-free India, over 24,000 kg of drugs seized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will be destroyed with Union home minister Amit Shah virtually watching the incineration here on Saturday.
There are designated places to destroy narcotics substances which are put in incinerators and not burnt in the open. The event will be followed by a regional meeting chaired by Shah on ‘Drug Trafficking and National Security’ here to discuss the drug scenario in the NE region and ways to mitigate it. The meeting will be attended by chief ministers and DGPs of all NE states.
According to an official source, about 11,000 kg of narcotic substances will be destroyed by the NCB, while over 13,000 kg of heroin, ganja, codeine cough syrup and narcotic pills will be destroyed by Assam and
Tripura.
On the clarion call of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to celebrate ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, NCB under the leadership of Shah took a pledge to destroy 75,000 kilograms of drugs on 75 years of Independence. NCB started the drug disposal campaign from June 1 and over 81,000 kg of confiscated drugs have been disposed by NCB teams in 11 different states in 60 days, crossing the target of destroying 75,000 kg in 75 days.
At the national conference held on July 30 in Chandigarh, Shah had started the process of destroying 31,000 kg of narcotics by various field units of NCB through virtual medium. During this special extermination drive from June 1 to 7, about 1,09,000 kg of confiscated narcotics was destroyed by the NCB.
