CHENNAI: Following a steady drop in the Covid-19 infection rate, the number of active cases in
Tamil Nadu dropped below the 5,000-mark on Friday.
The state reported 387 fresh cases, 88 of them in Chennai.
The average test positivity rate (TPR) has dropped to 3% and the discharge count is increasing steadily. Therefore, the number of patients needing hospitalisation or home isolation also dropped this week.
Of all the corona patients undergoing treatment in TN, only 6% needed hospital care as they had co-morbidities such as diabetes or hypertension. Others with mild symptoms such as cold or fever are in home quarantine.
None of the patients succumbed to the infection on Friday, leaving the state's death toll unchanged at 38,047.
The state health department has proposed to launch a massive campaign involving celebrities to increase booster dose coverage.
At present, only 27 % of the state's total population has taken the booster shot, which was provided free till September 30.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian told the media that the state government had asked the Centre for more booster vaccines.
