Microsoft Releasing Fix to Address Outlook Crashing Issues Upon Launch in Microsoft 365

Microsoft is finally releasing a fix that is intended to address crashing issues in Microsoft Outlook upon launch in the Microsoft 365 environment.

Microsoft Describes Outlook Crashing Issue in Microsoft 365

As users launch Outlook Desktop, the mail application may get past loading profile and processing and would briefly open, but it then stops responding, Microsoft described to Bleeping Computer the issue users encounter.

The software giant added that the problem occurs when the "EmailAddress string data value under the Office identity is blank."

As presented in a support document made available in August, these Outlook Desktop client crashes have been automatically logged in the Windows Event Viewer Application Log as Event 1000 or Event 1001.

On the impacted systems, these event entries will list 0x01483052 exception codes with 0x1328 faulting process IDs and 0x000000000024074d fault offsets.

In an update posted this week, Microsoft revealed that a fix is now rolling out to users in the Current and Semi-Annual Enterprise channels, with this patch available to other channels it in the near future.

Microsoft said the issue has been fixed in the Current Channel Version 2209 (Build 15629.20156) and Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) Version 2208 (Build 15601.20158). As these builds become available to other channels, the fixes will be provided subsequently.

Microsoft Offers Immediate Workarounds for Outlook Crashing Issue

For users who can't wait for the fixes from Microsoft, the company is also offering affected customers with several workarounds.

First, Microsoft said, users can sign out and then sign back into Office to repopulate the identity registry settings. For more information, use Sign in to Office.

If the identity is still not getting set properly, users can turn off the Support Diagnostics which then turns off the option to submit an In App ticket using Help, Contact Support, and its feature path that triggers Outlook to stop responding by setting the following registry key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General]

"DisableSupportDiagnostics"=dword:00000001

Then users can try manually setting the email address to the identity of the user experiencing the issue in the registry path referenced in the issue specifics above.

In a related development, Microsoft recently fixed a bug that causes the Outlook email client to crash when reading emails that contained tables like Uber receipt emails.

It also recalled a Microsoft 365 update in August after users reported Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Office applications crashing when hovering over a user's name or photo or looking at contact cards.

Other Microsoft workarounds have been made available on the Microsoft Support page.

If users encounter the Outlook crashes on Microsoft 365:

1. Investigate possible issues caused by add-ins

2. Repair Office

3. Create a new Outlook profile

4. Run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant
