COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore East all-woman police have arrested a 43-year-old man for raping a mentally ill woman near Vellalore.
The arrested man is the neighbour of the 22-year-old rape survivor who is living with her kin.
The accused, who is a goods autorickshaw driver, is married and has a seven-year-old son. His wife, who was seven months pregnant, had gone to her native place in Pudukottai district with her son. The driver was alone at his residence. On Friday evening, he took the woman to his house where he raped her. Later, he abandoned her near her house.
Her cousin started to search for her. The woman was spotted on the roadside near their home. The cousin asked her what had happened. The woman managed to reveal the incident to the cousin who lodged a complaint with the police on Friday evening.
The police registered a case against him under sections 376 (2) (i) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him on Friday night. He was remanded in judicial custody.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per the Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault. The identity of the accused is also not revealed here for the same reason as they are neighbours.)
