Dumka rerun: Woman set on fire by former boyfriend dies

Dumka: A 22-year-old girl was set ablaze in her sleep by her former boyfriend, early on Friday in Dumka, in an exact rerun of a similar incident in the same town on August 23, when a teenage girl was set on fire by her jilted lover, leading to her death.
Police on Friday said Maruti Kumari, 22, succumbed to her burn injuries at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) in Ranchi on Friday, hours after Rajesh Raut, 23, her former boyfriend barged into her room and poured petrol on her and lit a match.
The girl used to live with her maternal grandparents in Bharatpur village under Jarmundi police station since childhood.
Rajesh was arrested by the police, who according to the statement given by Maruti, had threatened to kill her in the same fashion as the minor girl killed earlier in the district, if she didn't agree to his proposal of marrying him, despite already being married in February this year.
“I could identify Rajesh, while he was escaping after setting me on fire in my sleep,” Maruti told police in the presence of a magistrate at the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital, where she was initially rushed and later referred to Rims after her condition deterioriated.
