Trio arrested for cheating moneylender of Rs 2 crore in TN
COIMBATORE: The Periyanaickenpalayam police in Coimbatore district arrested three men on Friday evening for cheating a moneylender of around Rs 2 crore. The trio threatened him with dire consequences when he approached them to get his money back.
The arrested men have been identified as S Kalimuthu, 28, of Watrap in Virudhunagar district, P Mohanraj, 38 and his relative S Vijayakumar, 35, of Tiruchengode in Namakkal district. They were booked under sections 294 (b), 420 and 506 (2) of the Indian Penal Code.
Mohanraj was working in a private firm at Periyanaickenpalayam which was engaged in shooting of private advertisements. Mohanraj came to know that the firm’s chief executive officer (CEO) was allegedly engaged in money doubling work. If he invested Rs 5 lakh to the CEO of the firm, he would get back Rs 10 lakh within a week period.
Believing this, Mohanraj borrowed Rs 2 crore from Ravichandran, 52, a moneylender in Nethaji Nagar in Namakkal in the last two years. Mohanraj owned properties worth more than Rs 5 crore in Tiruchengode in Namakkal district. The moneylender provided Rs 2 crore in various instalments. Mohanraj transferred the amount to the private firm CEO for money doubling. But Mohanraj did not return any amount to Ravichandran.
Mohanraj and Kalimuthu were working in the private firm and were staying in a rental house at Srinithi Nagar near Press Colony in Periyanaickenpalayam. Mohanraj’s relative Vijayakumar went to the rental house on Friday evening. The trio was consuming liquor. Ravichandran went to the house and asked Mohanraj to return his amount of Rs 2 crore. However, Mohanraj, Kalimuthu and Vijayakumar threatened Ravichandran with dire consequences and refused to return the amount.
Ravichandran lodged a complaint with the Periyanaickenpalayam police who registered a case against the trio and arrested them on Friday night. The police found nine bundles of dummy currency notes with denominations of Rs 2,000 at the rental house and seized the dummy currency notes. Mohanraj told the police that he placed an order online to get the dummy currency notes to use for advertisement shooting.
The arrested men were remanded in judicial custody.
