KALABURAGI: As many as 73 sheep were run over by a train at Mogala village in Chittapur taluk in Kalaburagi district on Friday morning.
The incident happened when the flock of sheep was being taken to a field by crossing a railway track. The loco pilot tried to stop the train, but could save only 20 sheep. The flock belonged to different farmers in Mogala village.
As the news of the sheep death spread, hundreds of people thronged the spot. Some of them took the injured sheep for meat, while others took away the dead ones too. Because of this, animal husbandry officers could not get the correct count of the dead/ injured sheep. This has also left the sheep owners aghast — neither they could get the sheep nor their count to claim compensation, which they anyway have demanded.
An FIR has been filed at Wadi railway police in the district.
