Rajkot: Following the daring loot in the city’s plush area, the city police have returned to the rule book which makes registration of migrant workers mandatory with the nearest police station. On Friday, at least 15 restaurant owners were booked for violating this notification. According to the district administration’s rough estimate, there are around one lakh migrant workers employed in factories, restaurants, construction sites besides domestic helps in the district. A notification by the Rajkot police commissioner mandates employers to register such employees with all details including the ID proof. However, the notification is seldom taken seriously. “In many cases, these workers don’t have ID proofs and they work at meagre salaries. Hence, many employees avoid their registration with police,” a senior official.
