Panaji: Goa experienced widespread activity of light rain on Thursday owing to the formation of a trough extending through peninsular India and moisture incursion over the state. This is considered as post-monsoon rainfall. Since it is not a well-defined trough, there is no heavy rainfall warning over Goa by the India meteorological department (IMD).
The weak trough was in the North of Goa owing to a circulation over the Andhra Pradesh coast, extending up to the Arabian Sea passing through parts of Karnataka and South Maharashtra.
“Its movement in the northwest direction resulted in a weak trough over Goa’s northern side, therefore resulting in light rainfall activity over the state,” IMD scientist Rahul M said.
The maximum temperature also slightly reduced to 27.6°C on Thursday.
Currently, the trough is weak and may persist and oscillate its location for one or two more days. The cloudy conditions, lightning and thunder may continue for two more days, as a result. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places on October 7 and 8. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are also very likely at most places on October 9 and 10.
“Since the trough is weak, its persistence might not be like the other normal systems we had in the monsoon season. We are monitoring the conditions but as of now there is no heavy rainfall warning over Goa,” IMD scientist said.
Squally wind speed reaching 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over the south Maharashtra-Goa coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off south Maharashtra-Goa coast for a few days.
