Man booked for killing stray dog
Coimbatore: The Saibaba Colony police registered a case against a man on Wednesday for killing a stray dog on Chinnanna Chettiyar Street at Velandipalayam on Tuesday afternoon.
Police identified him as Karthik of Velandipalayam. “He threw a rock at the dog while she was sleeping, dragged her to the road and beat her to death,” a police officer said.
Complainant P Lakshmi, a daily wager, said she used to feed the dog every day. She had spayed the dog with the help of NGO Humane Animal Society (HAS).
Karthik has been booked under sections 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code and 11 (1) (a) (treating animals cruelly – if any person – beats, kicks, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures or otherwise treats any animal so as to subject it to unnecessary pain or suffering or causes or, being the owner permits, any animal to be so treated) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
In a tweet, HAS urged police to arrest the accused. Sub-inspector Karthik is collecting CCTV footage from the area. tnn
