Video of woman addict goes viral revealing easy availability of drugs in Punjab
KAPURTHALA: A video of a young woman drug addict that went viral has exposed the extent of availability of drugs apart from her own personal predicament. “Munde kharre hunde aa bittan lai ke, jithon marji lai lao,” (Youths carry drugs and one can easily get these), she can be heard saying in the video, while also revealing that she was hooked to drugs for the last three years.
After the video went viral, police found her and admitted her in the government de-addiction centre. Doctors have found that she was pregnant and severely anaemic.
It is learnt that her video was recorded on Wednesday when she was lying on a bench in Civil Hospital compound. She revealed her name as Karanjot Kaur and did not tell from where she was. She said her husband was in jail and she would beg money to get drugs.
“I keep on moving around in Matabgarh,” she said and the her conversation also reflected that she was getting the drugs from the same area.
Kapurthala Civil Hospital deputy medical commissioner and de-addiction centre in-charge Dr Sandeep Bhola said that she had been undergoing treatment and then left.
“Apparently she relapsed into addiction again. She was brought to the hospital on Tuesday and after it was found that she was pregnant and severely anaemic she was admitted in general ward. She needed blood transfusion and we had told that after her general treatment for a couple of days we shall bring her to the women’s exclusive de-addiction centre but her attendants, including a woman, got her discharged on their own. She was brought to us again this morning,“ Dr Bhola said.
'Project needed for women addicts'
“Earlier, 240 women addicts were enlisted during a pilot outreach project for women addicts. Women don’t easily come for treatment and outreach programme is necessary. The project was discontinued in December 2020,” said Dr Sandeep Bhola.
