Actor Jayam Ravi who plays Arun Mozhi Varman, the titular role in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’, has disclosed that Tamil superstar Rajinikanth had called him up to congratulate him for his performance after watching the movie.

The ‘Thani Oruvan’ actor took to Twitter to share the happy news with his fans. “That one-minute conversation made my day, my year, and added a whole new meaning to my career. Thank you Thalaiva for your kind words and childlike enthusiasm. I am overwhelmed, humbled and blessed to know you loved the movie and my performance,” wrote an emotional Ravi.

Released on September 30, ‘PS:1’ has turned out to be a critical and commercial success. It had amassed Rs 300 crore worldwide in the first week, and earned more than $4.61 million (Rs 37 crore) in the US, beating the lifetime collection o( $4.58 million) of Rajinikanth's ‘Kabali’. ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 1’ is now the second biggest Tamil movie in the US, behind only the 2018 sci-fi movie ‘2.0’.

Directed by Mani Ratnam, ‘PS:1’ is a period drama based on the classic novel ‘Ponniyin: Selvan’ written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. It has an ensemble cast comprising illustrious stars like Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala and others.

The film is a passion project of Ratnam, who had reportedly attempted to make the film unsuccessfully thrice before. In an interview with a leading English daily, the ‘Roja’ director revealed that he had tried making the film once in 1980s, the second time in the 2000s, and for the third time in 2010, before finally succeeding in his fourth attempt.

The film is inching towards a Rs 350 crore-mark worldwide. In India it has grossed Rs 172 crore across all languages -Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. The movie also marks Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s return to Tamil cinema after a decade. This is her fourth collaboration with Ratnam. The actor-director duo had gifted the audience with cult classics like ‘Iruvar’ (1997), ‘Guru’ (2007), and ‘Raavanan’ (2010).
