6 state girls in India squad for U-17 World Cup
Ranchi: Six footballers from the state have been named in the national squad which will play in the upcoming Fifa U-17 women’s football World Cup scheduled to take place in India later this month.
On Wednesday, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) named its 21-member squad for the tournament. Among the 21 players are Ankita Kumari (forward), Ashtam Oraon (defender), Nitu Linda (midfielder), Purnima Kumari (defender), Sudha Anita Tirkey (forward), and Anjali Munda (goalkeeper) from Jharkhand.
Chief minister Hemant Soren tweeted: “Heartiest congratulations to all our talented players selected for the team to play the women’s U-17 football World Cup, a historic first. We are immensely proud to have supported the Indian national women’s team camp in Jamshedpur for nearly two years. I wish them the very best.”
Among the selected players, Ashtam Oraon, a resident of Gumla’s Bishunpur, has been named the captain. While Tirkey is also from Gumla, Purnima hails from Simdega. Nitu, Anjali and Ankita are natives of Ranchi district.
Meanwhile, taking cognizance of newspaper reports, Soren hosted the probables at the Ranchi Football Stadium to ensure their training and nutrition remained unhindered.
