THANE: A 52-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by a group of hawkers who objected to their presence at the Thane railway station, police informed on Wednesday.
A senior police official said the incident occurred on Sunday evening, when the woman was on her way back home from Dadar. She accidentally bumped into the wares of a hawker displayed atop the railway overbridge at Thane.
The woman got into an argument with the hawker and questioned why he was blocking space on the bridge and threatened to call the police and get him evicted. This infuriated the hawker, who then gathered his accomplices and assaulted the victim, informed police.
Ex-BJP corporator Sanjay Waghule, who represents station area, said he met the victim who told him that six hawkers had assaulted her and no co-passenger came to her rescue. "We have arrested two persons. The spot where the incident occurred has no CCTV cameras but we will check the ones nearby," said a railway official.
