Two killed, two injured in Belagavi accident
Belagavi: A woman and a girl were killed and two others were injured after a motorbike hit a road divider on Pune-Bengaluru NH-4 near Nipani town on Tuesday. The deceased are Laxmi Anand Koppad, 25, of Mugalihal in Saundatti taluk, and Bhagyashri Sagar Walkmi, 13, of Katakol village in Ramdurg taluk. The injured are bike rider Hanumant Venkappa Sakri, 23, and Maruti Ramesh Chunamdar, 6, both residents of Gormal village in Saundatti taluk. Their condition is said to be critical. A case has been registered at Nipani Rural police station. Police sources said the incident happened when Hanumant was riding to his hometown with three of his relatives riding pillion. He lost control over the bike after its rear tyre got punctured near Annapurna Hotel near Kurli Cross, after which he hit the divider. Due to the impact of the collision, all of them fell to the ground. While Bhagyashri died on spot, Laxmi breathed her last while being rushed to a hospital in Kolhapur in Maharashtra. The injured are being treated at Nipani Government Hospital.

Kulkarni is dead
Dharwad: Veteran actor, director and columnist Suresh Kulkarni died at a private hospital here on Wednesday after prolonged illness. He was 75. A resident of Malamaddi in Dharwad, Suresh was unmarried and had worked with actor-director Girish Karnad for several films, including ‘Ondanondu Kaladalli’. He had also acted in several TV serials. An authority over the history of Indian cinema, Suresh had written several articles and columns for Kannada and English newspapers and magazines. He was a source for information about the cinema for researchers and journalists. An expert in direction techniques, he was teaching in several educational institutions as a guest faculty and had delivered talks on AIR on various topics. His last rites were performed at Hosayallapur crematorium on Wednesday. Several writers and theatre activists paid last respects to the departed artist.

Dharwad: Pontiff of Kodimath, Shivanand Shivayogi Rajendra Swami, has predicted that heavy-to-extremely heavy rain will hit parts of south India, including Karnataka, during the holy Kartheeka month. After flagging off Dharwad Dasara Jamboo Savari here on Tuesday, he told reporters that at the beginning of 2022, he had predicted that there will be heavy rain, crop loss, nature’s fury and communal riots leading to unrest in several places, and these predictions have come true. “Again, the rain will continue to pound the state, and during Kartheeka, extremely heavy rain will cause miseries to people,” he said, and also predicted outbreak of epidemics and more conflicts between wild animals and humans. On Covid-19, the seer predicted this is the last phase of the pandemic and will end by 2023.

Dharwad: The department of posts and communication (philately) has brought out a commemorative postage stamp of Hindustani music maestro Pt Rambhau Kundgolkar, popular as Pandit Savai Gandharva. Union minister for railways and communications Ashwini Vaishnav will release the stamp at a function organised by Savai Gandharva Memorial Foundation (Dharwad) and the department of posts at Savai Gandharva Kala Mandir in Deshpande Nagar, Hubballi, on October 11 at 11am. Savai Gandharva Memorial Foundation president Somanath Ganesh Bhat said Union minister Prahlad Joshi, opthalomologist Dr M M Joshi, Narayanrao Hanagal, Postmaster-General S Rajendra Kumar and Post Master-General (north Karnataka) Vinod Kumar will be the guests of honour. Rambhau Kundgolkar Sunshi (January 19, 1886 - September 12, 1952) of Kundgol in Dharwad district was a popular Hindustani classical vocalist and a master in the genre of Kirana Gharana. The disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Rambhau was also the guru of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hanagal, Firoz Dastur and Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru.
Rowdy-sheeter exiled from
K’buragi for one year
Kalaburagi: A BJP functionary and rowdy-sheeter has been exiled from Kalaburagi district limits for one year by Kalaburagi city police commissioner Y S Ravikumar. The top cop issued the order October 5, giving five days’ time to Manikanth Rathod to leave the district. Rathod is involved in many cases pertaining to life-threats and PDS rice smuggling. Rathod had also violated bail conditions. He had been facging many cases, mostly rice smuggling ones, in Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Vijayapura districts. When ADGP Alok Kumar visited Kalaburagi city recently, Dalit associations requested him to exile Rathod from the district. When contacted, Kalaburagi DCP Adduru Shrinivas told TOI Rathod has been exiled to Shivamogga Rural police limits for one year.
