YAMUNANAGAR: Many had a narrow escape when a burning effigy of Ravan collapsed near the spectators collecting salvage sticks — which is considered a good omen — at a Dussehra event at Yamunanagar in
Haryana on Wednesday.
Some people keep these charred sticks at home as “the bones of the demon king Ravan” to ward off thieves.
A viral video of the incident showed the effigy toppling in the crowded ground. The police and the organiser of the Dussehra event claimed nobody was hurt.
“Only one man who went to pull a balli (bamboo stick) from Ravan’s effigy was at risk, but even he escaped unscathed. The Dussehra function is a huge draw and police officers, the MLA and the mayor were also present,” said Sanatan Dharam Sabha president Naresh Dhingra, who was the organiser.
Yamunanagar SHO Kamaljeet Singh confirmed that no one was injured.
