AJMER: Five people drowned during the immersion of goddess Durga's idol in a mining pit at Nandala village in Nasirabad block of Ajmer district on Wednesday. The villagers managed to pull out the five bodies at great difficulty. Police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
About 25 people of Nanda ji ki Dhani had gathered for the immersion of the idol in a pit full of water at Nandala village at about 3:15pm, said police. The pit, opened for mining, was filled with water during the monsoon. Finding it hard to push the idol into the pit, five villagers went inside it, unaware of the depth and the marsh in it. Villagers standing on bank of the pit tried to save them but failed. They managed to get the bodies out when they started floating. Additional SP of Kekeri, Ghanshyam Sharma, reached the spot and took the details of the accident. Ajmer SP Chuna Ram Jat also reached there after learning of the incident.
The deceased were identified as Pawan Raigar, 35, Rahul Meghwansi, 25, Rahul Raigar, 26, all of Nanda ji ki Dhani, and Lucky Berwa, 20, and Gajendra Raiger, 25, residents of Nasirabad city. Pawan Raigar and Ragul Raigar belonged to one family, said police.
