LUCKNOW: Two girls were killed while four persons sustained injuries after a speeding truck entered a market area thronged by Dussehra shoppers in Deoria district on Tuesday night.
Soon after the incident, the irate crowd created ruckus demanding action against the driver who was arrested by the police. The situation was normalised after senior police and district administrative officials reached the spot and pacified the protesters.
Superintendent of police, Deoria, Sankalp Sharma told TOI that around 9.30pm, a truck coming from Kotwali Road reached Garulpar where people were busy shopping for Dussehra.
Girls' parents among 4 hurt in accidentThe driver suddenly lost control over the wheels and hit half a dozen bikes parked on the roadside. The truck also hit several persons before stopping," said Sharma.
"Sakshi (13) and Trisha Yadav (3), who were cousins, died on the spot. They had come to the market with their parents to buy clothes. Their parents were also among four persons injured in the accident," he said.
Locals and passersby immediately arranged for an ambulance and informed the police. The victims were taken to the local hospital where doctors pronounced Sakshi and Trisha dead.
