Flower prices skyrocket in Pune ahead of Dussehra

The prices of flowers are touching new height in Pune on the eve of Dussehra. The prices of marigold flowers have risen from Rs 50-60 few days ago to now over Rs 100 due to high demand for flower in the city. The prices are rising as the festival is being celebrated after a hiatus of two long years break due to spread of Covid pandemic. Recent rains have also damaged the flower production and supply.

However, customers said that the high prices won't affect the buying decision as it's the innate part of celebration.
Flowers are an integral part of the Navratri festival.

Apart from flowers, festival essentials like lemon and ash gourd have touched the roof in some cities. Prices of lemon and ash gourd have also sky rocketed in the past couple of days. From Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg, the price of ash gourd has touched Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. The price of lemons is also in the same range. The price of lotus has gone from Rs 900 to Rs 1,650 per kg, whereas jasmine is at Rs 1,400 per kg and chrysanthemum (sevanthige) is at Rs 400 per kg.

The price have increased even as supply in the market have rises many times. On any given day , farmers supply around 200 tempos of flowers to gultekdi flower market but a day before Dussehra, a record breaking number of 2500 tempos with Marigold flowers have arrived in the market.
