NOIDA: A group of Noida condominiums have come together for the first time to set up a waste management plant in Sector 50 in compliance with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016, which mandates bulk waste generators to process biodegradable waste in-house.
Around 30 highrises, including Stellar Kings Court, Mahagun Maphel, Windsor Green, Amrapali Exotica, Palm Grove, Kailash Dham, all from Sector 50, and Golf City, Sector 75, J M Orchid in Sector 76, among others have come together for a decentralised waste management plant.
Rajiva Singh, president of the Noida Federation of Apartment Owners Associations (NOFAA) said most older highrises do not have sufficient space to process their biodegradable waste in-house.
“We have been planning to set up an in-house waste management plant in our neighbourhood. The Noida Authority had recently allotted us a 1,000 square meter plot in Sector 50 for this project,” he said, adding that the project is expected to cost around Rs 80 lakh.
The Noida Authority issued a letter to NOFAA on September 20 in which it stated that the land has been allotted for the development of the bio-methanation plant in Sector 50.
“This is in reference to your letter dated March 28, 2022, for the development of a waste management plant in Sector 50. It is to inform you that the application has been approved. NOFAA has to bear the expenses for the development of the project,” read the letter.
The plant is expected to become functional by January 2023. It will have the capacity to process around 5, 000 kg of wet waste per day.
On Monday, a bhoomi poojan was organised at the site. Indu Prakash Singh, OSD, Noida Authority, participated in the event and said the cluster’s collective effort in waste management will help in making Noida a waste-free city. He said the Authority has been collecting door-to-door garbage from different sectors and villages since 2019.
“We had earlier set up the waste management plants at 18 places in different sectors from the funds of the Noida Authority. However, we did not get a good response from residents. This time the cluster of condominiums has agreed to develop and maintain the plant themselves. If this becomes successful, we will implement this at other places as well,” he added.
