Govt hospital staff in Kushalnagar save one-year-old girl’s life
Madikeri: The efforts of a team of doctors, and the other medical staff at the Kushalnagar Government Hospital in Kodagu, have come in for much praise after the life of a year-old girl, who was having trouble breathing was saved.
Shanya, one, the daughter of Kushalnagar resident Divitha Tammaiah, was struggling to breathe, and was rushed to the government hospital on Sunday. Paediatrician at the Kushalnagar Government Hospital KN Shivakumar, assisted by Dr Priyanka and the other staff at the hospital, examined the baby, and realised that the girl’s heart rate and oxygen level had plummeted. On the one hand, the doctors started treating the child, while on the other, the parents were advised to take the girl to JSS Hospital in Mysuru. Once the decision to transfer the girl to Mysuru was made, an ambulance, equipped with all the machinery for emergency care, was requisitioned. Dr Shivakumar, along with medical student Dr Shafiq, accompanied the girl to Mysuru.
En route Mysuru, when Shanya’s heart rate plummeted again, the ambulance was halted, and the doctors restored her. Using artificial respiration equipment, oxygen was pumped into the girl, said Dr Shivakumar. “When we were close to Mysuru, we called 108, and contacted the city police commissioner, whom we intimated of her condition. We requested for a zero-traffic corridor from Metagalli to JSS Hospital in Mysuru. The commissioner obliged,” said Dr Shivakumar.
Paediatric surgeon at JSS Hospital, Mysuru, Dr Sudhanshu kept the operation theatre ready, and no sooner was Shanya brought in that she was rushed into procedure.
Kushalnagar Government Hospital medical officer Dr Madhusudhan said, “The operation was successful, and the child is now recovering in the intensive care unit. The staff at our hospital played a crucial role in saving the child’s life.”
