Panel formation at special gram sabha upsets Curca, Chimbel locals
Panaji: The appointment of village development committees (VDCs) and other panels during the special gram sabha on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2, evoked protests at the panchayats of Chimbel and Curca-Bambolim-Telaulim, as members demanded better publicity and attendance for the process.
At the special gram sabha at Curca, the ruling members and two panch members of Revolutionary Goans locked horns along with their supporters over the issue of naming the VDC. RG panchs Mahanand Kundaikar and Deepali Kankonkar said VDCs should be formed during an ordinary gram sabha. They requested that the process be postponed as the meeting was not publicised well enough, but the ruling panel went ahead with naming the panel’s office-bearers, triggering confusion and frayed tempers. Fortunately, there was no violence.
At Chimbel, fewer than 30 members out of a population of at least 10,000 were present at the first gram sabha after the panchayat polls, presided over by sarpanch Sandhesh Shirodkar. The formation of new committees sparked off some heat as Gurudas Shirodkar of Chimbel Manch pointed out that it should be done at an ordinary gram sabha after due notice and publicity. The sarpanch responded positively and assured to convene an ordinary gram sabha soon following due procedure, and to also organise it in an open space for better participation.
