
Mumbai, Maharashtra News Highlights: Five people were killed and eight injured in a collision between an ambulance and four cars on the southbound stretch of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in the wee hours of Wednesday. Traffic has been stalled in parts of the Sea Link. Expressing his condolences to the families of the victims, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday tweeted: “Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope that those who have been injured have a speedy recovery.”
Meanwhile, for first time since the Shiv Sena’s inception 56 years ago, two Dussehra rallies will be held in Mumbai on Wednesday by the party’s rival factions — led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his predecessor Uddhav Thackeray — in what is being billed as a show of strength by both camps after a change in government in June. While the Uddhav Thackeray faction will hold its rally at the historic Shivaji Park in Dadar in central Mumbai, a venue associated with the Shiv Sena since its inception in 1966, the group led by Shinde has organised their event at the MMRDA ground at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in the suburbs.

Ahead of the conclusion of the nine-day Navratri festival, the Mumbai Traffic Police issued an order, laying down traffic restrictions from 3 pm till midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, anticipating large processions for the immersion of Devi idols in the city. As per the restrictions, 22 roads will be closed for vehicular traffic, 18 roads will have one way traffic movement and 45 roads will have parking restrictions in Mumbai.
Two calls, the last one at 5.04 pm, were received at a call centre of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital threatening to blow up the hospital and threatening to take the lives of Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani, an RIL Spokesperson said.
The caller also threatened to blow up Antilia and gave multiple threats to members of the Ambani family. A police complaint has been registered and we are providing all the necessary details to the police in their investigations, the spokesperson added.
BJP leader Pankaja Munde said she was not disgruntled over not getting any post, and would start preparations for contesting the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections from Parli.
Munde, daughter of BJP stalwart late Gopinath Munde, was speaking at her customary Dussehra rally at Sawargaon Ghat in Beed district.
"Struggle is part of everyone's life. Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had to struggle. Late Gopinath Munde had to struggle throughout his entire political career. He got into government for only four and a half years," she said. She was carrying forward the legacy of Jan Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya, Pankaja further said. (PTI)
On the occasion of Dussehra, the Mumbai Police tweeted a message on road safety which said "you don't have ten heads to spare".
The Maharashtra cabinet has cleared a proposal to allow police personnel to take home loans at subsidised interest rates. The scheme was earlier launched in 2017 and was implemented till 2019, after which it was discontinued by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which takes care of Mumbai's iconic Bandra Worli Sea link, said they have all safety protocols in place. Whenever an emergency takes place, their dedicated rescue team reaches the spot along with an ambulance. However, considering the severity of Wednesday morning’s accident, where five persons were killed, the MSRDC has decided to revise their standard operating procedure so that such accidents do not occur in the future, said officials.
An official said, “Safety barricades and cones were set up around 500 metre ahead of the spot where the staffers were engaged in rescue works. The driver of the erring car not only overlooked the barriers but also rammed into the stationary vehicles and the people. The driver was drunk and driving at a high speed and lost control over the wheels.”

A call was received on landline number of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital at early on Wednesday from an unknown number in which the caller has threatened to blow up the Hospital and has issued threats in name of some members of the Ambani family.
Offence in this incidence is being registered at DB Marg Police Station and further investigation in this matter is being done by Mumbai Police, the Zonal DCP said.
Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member Krupal Tumane claimed two MPs and five MLAs from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena faction will join the group headed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the latter's Dussehra rally in the evening.
The two MPs could be from Mumbai and Marathwada region, Tumane, who is part of the Shinde group, told a news channel. "You will see in the evening," he added.
At present, the Shinde faction comprises 40 MLAs, including the CM, and 12 Lok Sabha members. The Thackeray faction is left with 15 MLAs and six Lok Sabha members. (PTI)

Hours before the Bandra-Worli sea link crash in Mumbai that claimed five lives, a 30-year-old pregnant woman travelling on a bike with her husband after ‘Devi darshan’ was killed on the spot in a hit-and-run accident in Worli early Wednesday, police said.
According to the police, the accident took place around 12.45 am on Dr Annie Besant Road, near Kotak Mahindra Bank and M A Podar Hospital, when a speeding truck hit Rohini Pardesi, 30, and her husband Deepak Pardesi, 29, who were returning to their home in Mumbai central.
Rohini, who was four months pregnant, went under the wheels of the heavy vehicle, while Deepak who was thrown off the bike sustained minor injuries.
State Congress chief Nana Patole Wednesday said his party will throw its weight behind the Shiv Sena candidate in the upcoming Andheri East bypolls slated to be held on November 3.
The seat was with Congress till 2014. Earlier this year, the seat fell vacant after the death of Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latke.

Hours after an accident on Mumbai’s Bandra Worli Sea Link killed five people and injured several others early on Wednesday, the police said that a series of events led to the fatal crash.
According to the police, at around 2:40 am, the tyre of a Swift car travelling in the south-bound direction of the sea link burst. “The front tyre on the left side suddenly burst due to which the driver of that vehicle lost control and hit the railing on the sea link,” a police officer said. One of the guards posted on the sea link, identified as Rajendra Singh, informed the toll plaza about the accident.

Members of Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde faction Wednesday used the yet-to-be-opened Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, alleged opposition party leaders. Congress MLA from Jalana Kailash Gorantyal said that around 100 vehicles of rebel Sena leader Arjun Khotkar's supporters used the expressway.
"I have received the information from our people. The Shinde group's fleet comprising 100 vehicles used the expressway and it passed through his house," Gorantyal told the media. He asked how come the expressway, which is still not open to the common people, is being used by the Shinde faction supporters.
"A video, shot through a drone, has emerged of Khotkar and his supporters travelling in hundreds of cars on Samruddhi Expressway. Cars with saffron flags were seen in the visuals," said a source.
All five victims in the Bandra Worli Sea Link accident in Mumbai early on Wednesday were trying to save the lives of people involved in another accident on the sea link when a speeding car rammed into them, the police said.
Four toll plaza employees and an ambulance driver were killed in the accident that took place around 2.20 am between pole number 76 and 78 on the southbound stretch of the sea link. Read more
The Western Railway (WR) has further reduced the travelling time of the newly-introduced Mumbai-Gandhinagar Vande Bharat Superfast Express train with effect from Wednesday.
It will take five minutes less to cover the distance from Mumbai Central to Gandhinagar in Gujarat and will also arrive 20 minutes early at Mumbai Central from Gandhinagar, according to a release issued by the WR on Tuesday.
The train started its commercial run on October 1, a day after it was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat capital Gandhinagar. There is no change in the train's departure timing of 6.10 am from Mumbai Central and 2.05 pm from Gandhinagar. But the arrival timetable of the train at all the en-route stations and destinations is changed. (PTI)

Anticipating huge turnouts at the rallies of the Sena factions, the Mumbai Police have tightened security at the Shivaji Park and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), an official said on Tuesday. More than 5,000 buses, a number of small tourist vehicles and cars, and a special train have been roped in to ferry supporters of the two rival Shiv Sena factions for their respective Dussehra rallies, sources said.
The rallies have generated intense interest in political circles and also among common citizens and there will be more than just speeches by the two friends-turned-foes as the rival factions seek to present themselves as the 'real' Shiv Sena and try to claim the legacy of the party founder late Bal Thackeray.
