COIMBATORE: To inculcate reading habit and to make books accessible to the community, the city police plan to launch mobile libraries in autorickshaws plying in the city, police commissioner V Balakrishnan said on Saturday.
The officer, who met more than 120 passenger autorickshaw drivers at the Police Community Hall here on Saturday, said the department will install a stand with five books in the vehicles. "Autorickshaw drivers are often seen at stands busy using mobile phones and browsing the internet. We want them to read books, which will improve their linguistic skills. With the help of sponsors, we will install a stand in the vehicles and place five books. The drivers and passengers can read the books, which will be replaced with new ones once a month."
"Working women and college students often use autorickshaws and the drivers should make them feel safe and secure. I urge all auto drivers to take a stand against drunk drivers," Balakrishnan said.
The city police will arrange first-aid training for the drivers soon, the officer added.
