TWO MEN have been arrested for allegedly killing a six-year-old boy, in what they claimed was a “sacrifice for prosperity”, at the construction site of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquarters in South Delhi’s Lodhi Colony Saturday night, said police.

Police said the accused, Vijay Kumar (19) and Amar Kumar (22), were under the influence of drugs when they allegedly slit the boy’s neck and stabbed him in the head.

The accused hailed from Bihar and worked as cement cutters at the site. The boy lived with his parents at the site, where they work as labourers. The family, which had reached Delhi from UP’s Bareilly about a month ago, said it was busy with Durga Puja festivities when the incident took place.

According to police, a call was received at 12.40 am Sunday from security staff at the CRPF site.

DCP (South) Chandan Choudhary said: “We were told that a six-year-old boy was killed and two men were caught. We rushed to the spot and found the victim in the jhuggis opposite the construction site. Labourers and CRPF personnel had caught the accused. We found that the accused called the boy, who knew them, to their kitchen around 10.30 pm and killed him with a weapon.”

Police said the accused were “disoriented” when they were caught as they had allegedly “consumed smack/ ganja”. They later allegedly said they wished to “please” the gods.

“Further enquiry revealed that Vijay had a ‘vision’ about the murder. He (accused) stated that he consumed drugs and approached some women (at the site) for incense sticks. However, they refused to help him. He went back and then saw… (a god) in his ‘vision’. He then picked up the child and killed him inside his shed. The accused revealed this in their disclosure statements,” said the DCP. Sources said both the accused had been working at the site for months.

The boy’s parents said that after shifting to Delhi, they had wanted the boy and his two-year-old sister to join school.

“My son was playing with his friends. The women were singing bhajans and doing puja while we were going to a temple. After 10.30 pm, the accused pulled him into the shed. We searched for him everywhere. Later, I found blood coming out of their house. I went in and found them pushing my son’s body under a cot. I screamed for help… We came to Delhi around four-five weeks ago. Our family never fought with anyone. Why did they kill my son?” said his father.

According to the family, one of the accused attempted to flee while the other was inside his room where the boy’s body was found. “Initially, when I was searching for my boy and found blood oozing out of their (accused) shed, I thought they were slaughtering a hen. I was shocked to find my boy there. He died on the spot,” said his mother.
