MYSURU: Jayamma, a 93-year-old woman inmate at Mysuru Central Prison, petitioned home minister Araga Jnanendra on Saturday, seeking his help to get her released from jail, based on her age.
According to the prison authorities, Jayamma was sentenced to seven years in jail, in a dowry death case, nearly three years ago. She has been serving a prison sentence since then. During the visit of the home minister, the oldest prisoner at the jail, requested for release, considering her age. The minister promised to look into her case. An officer claimed that there are no guidelines for the release of prisoners on good conduct, for those serving sentences for short terms.
The minister received a petition on Saturday from many prisoners, demanding to reintroduce the system of parole, which provides them an opportunity to visit their homes for a brief period every year, after completion of a certain number of years of their prison term. The government had cancelled the system, following the outbreak of Covid-19.
